Convicted Ex-Cop Derek Chauvin from George Floyd Case, Stabbed at FCI Tucson

Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson. Derek Chauvin News

An ex-Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, the officer convicted of George Floyd’s murder, sustained severe injuries in a stabbing by another prisoner at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson (FCI Tucson), a federal prison in Arizona.

According to an Associated Press source, the incident occurred at the FCI Tucson, a medium-security prison facing challenges like security lapses and staff shortages.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, an inmate at FCI Tucson was attacked, according to confirmation from the US Bureau of Prisons. According to the agency, prison officials quickly brought the situation under control. They carried out life-saving procedures before transferring the unidentified prisoner to a hospital for additional assessment and care.

The FBI was informed, and no staff members were hurt, according to the Bureau of Prisons. Visitation to the roughly 380 prisoners housed there has been temporarily suspended.

In August 2022, Chauvin, then 47 years old, was transferred from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison to FCI Tucson in order to serve a 22-year state sentence for second-degree murder and a 21-year federal sentence for violating Mr. Floyd’s civil rights.

Anticipating that Derek Chauvin would be a target, his attorney, Eric Nelson, had called for keeping him isolated from other prisoners. In court documents from the previous year, Mr. Nelson stated that Chauvin was mostly detained in solitary confinement in Minnesota “largely for his own protection.”

Despite the recent rejection of his murder conviction appeal by the US Supreme Court, Chauvin is attempting to overturn his federal guilty plea, arguing that new evidence demonstrates he did not cause Floyd’s death.

George Floyd passed away on May 25, 2020, as Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for over nine minutes in an effort to restrain him during a suspected 20-dollar counterfeit arrest. The incident, captured on bystander video, ignited global protests and prompted discussions on police brutality and racism.
