Derek Chauvin in Stable Condition After FCI Tucson Stabbing Incident

Authorities said that Derek Chauvin is expected to survive the recent Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson (FCI Tucson) stabbing attack he was involved in.

Chauvin, 47, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, was stabbed in an Arizona prison last week.

Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara and a spokesperson for state attorney general Keith Ellison’s office state that Chauvin is recovering, according to a People report.

O’Hara said that Chauvin was “in stable condition.” According to Brian Evans, Ellison’s spokesperson, the attorney general’s office heard that Chauvin is expected to survive as of Friday evening.

Chauvin was seriously injured when another inmate attacked him at the FCI Tucson, Arizona, as reported by the Associated Press (AP) from a source familiar with the incident.

According to the AP, the prison is medium-security but has been low-staffed, resulting in a lack of security.

A later statement from the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) stated that an unidentified prisoner at the FCI Tucson had been attacked on Friday at 12:30 p.m. BOP said that no employees were injured during the incident. Prison staff initiated life-saving measures for one inmate. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was requested while continuing life-saving efforts.

EMS transported the prisoner to a nearby hospital for additional care and evaluation. The FBI has also been notified of the incident, according to the BOP.

Derek Chauvin pleaded guilty to federal charges in July 2022 of violating Floyd’s civil rights by having his knee placed against his neck during a May 25, 2020 arrest that resulted in his death. Chauvin was given a 21-year sentence in federal prison.
