Federal Bureau of Prisons Launches Conditional FSA Release Date Calculator

Rubber stamping that says 'Released'. News - Release Date Calculator, Federal Bureau of Prisons

In a move aimed at providing transparency and assistance to both employees and Adults in Custody (AIC), the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) announced the launch of the Conditional First Step Act (FSA) Release Date Calculator in late October.

This innovative tool is designed to offer valuable information on the potential positive impact of earning Federal Time Credits (FTC) toward advancing an individual’s release date. The calculator serves as a “best case” scenario estimator, enabling earlier prerelease planning for both FBOP employees and AICs.

However, it is crucial to note that the calculator should only be utilized as a planning tool and not mistaken for an individual’s actual Projected Release Date (PRD). The PRD is reflective of the Federal Time Credits earned and applied toward facilitating the individual’s transition to supervised release and an earlier release from FBOP custody. Until the FTC credits are earned, they cannot be applied to the actual release date.

The PRD is also the date available on the FBOP’s Federal Inmate Locator, accessible on the public website.

In early November, existing AICs were provided with comprehensive information regarding FSA FTCs, including details on FSA Conditional Release Dates. To ensure uniformity, all individuals entering FBOP custody will receive the same information in their institution’s Admission and Orientation Handbook.

AICs seeking clarification or additional information regarding any aspect of the FSA, including eligibility, requirements, limitations, and programs, are encouraged to engage with their unit team.
