Last week, 36 Buprenorphine strips were discovered hidden inside a book that was being transported to Red Onion State Prison in Wise County, Virginia.

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) reports that on Tuesday, December 12, staff of the Centralized Mail Unit were conducting an inspection of mail that was destined for Red Onion State Prison. During their inspection, they discovered a book that had 36 Buprenorphine strips in a concealed location within its spine.

It is not the first time that staff of the Virginia Department of Corrections have discovered drugs that were hidden on their way into a prison. In the first few months of this year, the Centralized Mail Distribution Center successfully seized over one hundred packages of mail that were suspected to contain illegal substances before they could be delivered to prisons in the state of Virginia.

VADOC Director Chad Dotson expressed appreciation to the Centralized Mail Distribution Center employees for successfully averting the entry of the identified item into their facility. He emphasized the ongoing commitment of the Department to proactively address and prevent the infiltration of drugs and contraband across all facilities, with the overarching goal of maintaining a secure and safe environment for both employees and inmates.
